In this course we look at different brands of shock oil. How they can be tested without expensive lab equipment, and what the results of the tests mean in the real world. Do you need to use the specific oil that a manufacturer recommends, or can you use an alternative? Does paying more for an oil get you a better product? What characteristics of the oil effect damping performance?

Intitial Tests

What started out as a quick test to see how some oil that we were given compared to the oil we would normally use quickly escalated. 
The results showed that we needed to look at the oil in more detail to get a better understanding of what was happening.

Testing More Oils with a Different Design of Shock

Would the results we'd found with the first design of shock, be the same with a different design? Would other oils show similar results? We tested the leading oils on the market to find out.
What do the figures on the oil spec sheet mean in terms of force at the shock? What actually happens when changing from a low kinematic viscosity oil to a higher viscosity? Is it as big a change as the numbers on the spec sheet might suggest?
